The rule is simple: the OTB is paid on the 10th. When the 10th is a Saturday, Sunday or statutory holiday, the payment moves earlier, to the last working day before. That is why the January and October 2026 payments came on the 9th (the 10th was a Saturday) and the May payment on the 8th (the 10th was a Sunday).

The CRA had not published the monthly dates for January to June 2027 as of Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The one 2027 date already set is Thursday, June 10, 2027, when people who chose a single annual payment receive their whole 2026–27 benefit.

What the OTB is: three credits in one payment

The OTB is an Ontario program run by the Canada Revenue Agency. It combines three provincial credits into one deposit:

  • Ontario energy and property tax credit (OEPTC) — helps low- to moderate-income residents with property tax, rent and energy costs.
  • Northern Ontario energy credit (NOEC) — for people living in Northern Ontario, where home energy costs are higher.
  • Ontario sales tax credit (OSTC) — a tax-free payment to offset sales tax for low- to moderate-income households.

You may qualify for one, two or all three. Whatever you qualify for is added up and paid together.

Maximum amounts for July 2026 to June 2027

The 2026 benefit year runs from July 2026 to June 2027 and is based on your 2025 tax return. Ontario publishes these annual maximums:

CreditSituationAnnual maximum
OEPTCAge 18 to 64$1,307
OEPTCAge 65 and over$1,488
OEPTCLiving on a reserve or in a public long-term care home$290
OEPTCTime in a designated college, university or private school residence in 2025$25
NOECSingle$189
NOECFamily$290
OSTCYou, your spouse or partner, and each child under 19$378 each

Most people get less than the maximum. The OEPTC and NOEC depend on your income, age, family size and the rent or property tax you paid. The OSTC is reduced by 4% of adjusted net income above $29,047 for a single person with no children, or above $36,309 for single parents and couples. The CRA's child and family benefits calculator gives an estimate for your situation; your notice of determination shows the actual amount.

Monthly, lump sum in July, or once in June

How you are paid depends on the size of your annual entitlement:

Annual OTB amountHow it is paid
Over $500Monthly from July 2026 to June 2027 — or, if you chose this on your 2025 return, one payment on June 10, 2027
$500 or lessOne lump sum in July 2026
More than $2 but less than $10Rounded up to $10
$2 or lessNo payment

The total is the same whichever way it is paid. Waiting for a single June payment can work as forced savings, but it means receiving nothing for eleven months. If you received a July lump sum, there are no further OTB payments until the next benefit year starts in July 2027 — which is why many people see "no OTB" in later months and assume something is wrong.

Who qualifies

  • OEPTC: you lived in Ontario on December 31, 2025 and, in 2025, paid rent or property tax for your main home, paid accommodation in a public long-term care home, paid home energy costs on a reserve, or lived in a designated student residence. You must also be 18 or older, have a spouse or common-law partner, or be a parent living with your child, before June 1, 2027.
  • NOEC: the same, but you lived in Northern Ontario on December 31, 2025 and paid those costs there.
  • OSTC: you live in Ontario and are 19 or older, have a spouse or partner, or are a parent living with your child. No separate application is needed.

Each monthly payment also depends on where you live on the 1st of that month.

How to apply

  1. File your income tax and benefit return every year, even with no income. The OTB is calculated from it.
  2. Complete Form ON-BEN (Application for the Ontario Trillium Benefit and Ontario Senior Homeowners' Property Tax Grant) with your return to claim the OEPTC and NOEC. The choice to receive one annual payment in June is made when you file your return; for 2025 returns the deadline for that choice is December 31, 2026. Tax software includes it; you enter your rent or property tax there.
  3. Set up direct deposit with the CRA. If your refund is direct-deposited, the OTB is too; otherwise it is mailed.

To be paid on time from July, the return had to be filed by April 30. Late filers still qualify: if your 2025 return is assessed after June 19, 2026, the first payment — including what you missed — generally arrives four to eight weeks after the assessment, then monthly on the 10th. No interest is paid on delayed OTB amounts. If you forgot to claim in an earlier year, you can ask the CRA to adjust a return from any of the previous 10 years (through My Account or Form T1-ADJ) instead of filing a new one.

If your OTB payment is late

  1. Check the date in the table — remember that payments move earlier, not later, when the 10th is not a working day.
  2. Check whether you were paid in July as a lump sum or chose the June 2027 single payment.
  3. Wait 10 working days after the payment date, as the CRA asks, before contacting it.
  4. Sign in to CRA My Account to see your benefit notice, payment history and direct deposit details.
  5. Watch for scams. Ontario says it does not send text messages asking for personal information or offering benefit refunds; don't click links in unexpected messages about the OTB.

Other Ontario payments on a different day

The Ontario child benefit is not part of the OTB. It is paid with the Canada child benefit on the CCB date (for example Fri, Nov 20, 2026), up to $146.66 a month per child from July 2026 to June 2027. The federal Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, which replaced the GST/HST credit, is paid quarterly on its own dates.

Frequently asked questions

When is the next Ontario Trillium Benefit payment?

The remaining 2026 payments are on Tuesday, November 10 and Thursday, December 10. The countdown at the top of the page always shows the next one.

Why was my OTB paid on the 9th instead of the 10th?

When the 10th falls on a weekend or holiday, the CRA pays on the last working day before it. In 2026 that happened in January, May and October.

Why didn't I get an OTB payment this month?

If your annual amount was $500 or less, it was paid as one lump sum in July. If you chose a single annual payment, it comes on June 10, 2027. Otherwise check CRA My Account after waiting 10 working days.

How much is the Ontario Trillium Benefit?

For July 2026 to June 2027 the maximums are $1,307 (OEPTC, age 18–64), $1,488 (OEPTC, 65+), $189 or $290 (NOEC) and $378 per person (OSTC). Your amount depends on income, rent or property tax and family size.

Do I need to apply for the OTB?

For the energy and property tax credit and the Northern Ontario energy credit, yes — with Form ON-BEN on your tax return. The sales tax credit needs no separate application, but you must file a return.

Is the OTB taxable?

No. The CRA states that the OTB is not taxable.

Is the Ontario child benefit part of the OTB?

No. The Ontario child benefit is paid with the Canada child benefit, on the CCB date, not on the 10th.

Have the 2027 OTB dates been published?

Only the June 10, 2027 single annual payment date. The monthly 2027 dates will be added when the CRA publishes them.
